July 4th, 1949, the Local government act was proclaimed. April, 1952, the first Sangju Eup & Myeon council election was held and May, the council opened. However, May 16th, 1961, the Military junta dissolved the local councils. And 30 years later, March 26th, 1991 the local council election was held again. April 15th, the first Sangju city & county council opened. January 1st, 1995, Sangju city and Sangju county were combined, and the new town & village complex city was made.
January 3rd, the combined Sangju city council opened with 25 members. July 11th, 1995, the 2nd council, July 10th, 1998 the 3rd council, July 8th, 2002 the 4th council, July 7th, 2006, the 5th council, July 6th, 2010 the 6th council and July 8th, 2014, the 7th council, 2018, the 8th council opened
